An online retreat day for Advent

December 9th or 16th 2023

The words of the well loved Advent carol O come, O come Emmanuel have a distinctly biblical feel, differing from the more overtly celebratory tone of most carols that we hear at this time of the year.  For example, the actual nativity narrative doesn’t feature and there are no herald angels nor flocks being watched by night.

Instead, the themes of this carol are based on Messianic titles used by the Old Testament prophets, in prophecies that we understand Christ to be the fulfilment of.  The roots of the text come from the ‘Great O Antiphons’ that traditionally are used in services during the last seven days of Advent leading up to Christmas.

During our time together we will reflect on these names and titles for God, asking what they might show each of us about our relationship to Christ – who comes to dwell amongst us.

The day is primarily devotional and will include reflections from Sr Rachel, space for personal reflection and prayer and if you wish, the opportunity to share in a small group.

The day is open to all who would like to join us on either 9th or 16th December 2023 and will be delivered on Zoom, allowing you the possibility of a quiet reflective day in your own home as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.

I look forward to being with you once again as we prepare for Christmas.
