Leading into Silence
There are many ways of LEADING INTO SILENCE with the intention of focussing ourselves to wait upon God. We can do this by using words, received by the mind, or it can be useful to try to focus the senses and the body. One of the most immediate distractions to the recollected mind is the body's clamour for attention and one of the simplest ways to still the mind is to concentrate it on the senses.
It is virtually impossible, even were it is desirable, to totally empty the mind.
Unless we are quite far along the path of prayer and have a spiritual guide it is important to take into the silence a word, a phrase from the Bible, or a symbol, or a picture. That will keep us safe.
