Dying and Letting Go
This is a powerful exercise and might be best done as a group. The group needs warning so that any who know this would be too much for them can opt out.
If it is done as a group the sections can be spoken by the leader or perhaps, since we all need different amounts of time, a handout might be better so that each member of the group can move at their own pace.
Allow plenty of time for discussion at the end as deep and maybe difficult feelings may have arisen.
EXERCISE
Brief silence, eyes closed and relaxed.
Time for relaxation
Begin to imagine your own death:
How old are you?
Where are you?
What are you dying from?
Are you alone or is there someone with you?
If so who is with you, or who do you want to be with you?
What do you want to say to them, and what are your last words to them?
What are their last words to you?
What is happening just before and just after your death?
Is there any sense of the presence of good or evil?
What are your feelings?
Alone? Happy?
Afraid? Glad?
Angry? Peaceful?
Sad?
COMING OUT OF THE EXERCISE
What do you feel now that you are not dying?
Short silence.
Are there any other minor experiences of letting go that are better understood now in the light of that exercise, e.g. moving house, children leaving home, changing job?
Does thinking about our own mortality in any way equip us for living?
